Tarawera Ultramarathon by UTMB is an iconic trail running event held in Rotorua, New Zealand’s birthplace of tourism. Join us for the 15th edition on 17-18 February 2024.
Our spectacular courses take in the most stunning scenery imaginable, featuring eight different lakes, waterfalls, and the lushest native New Zealand forests.
Whether you choose the TUM21, TUM50, TUM102 or the TUMMiler, our friendly trail running community welcomes athletes of all abilities with open arms. Courses are all point-to-point, on mostly non-technical runnable terrain. They are designed with the aim of seeing everyone succeed.
Tarawera Ultramarathon by UTMB is part of the UTMB World Series, attracting some of the world’s best elite trail runners. The TUM102 and the TUMMiler are both qualification races for the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. All distances carry the opportunity to earn Running Stones towards qualifying for UTMB Mont Blanc.

TUM 21km
The TUM21 is an achievable, point-to-point 21km trail run that has all the fun of the other distances with less of the run! This is a great option for first time trail runners and families.
TUM 50km
The TUM50 trail run is an achievable 50km course for runners of all abilities. If you’ve completed a road marathon or a few half marathons, then this is the perfect step up. Once you experience trail running, you’ll never want to go back to the road!
TUM 102km
If you’re a seasoned marathon runner or endurance athlete, with the right training and preparation, you’ll love the experience of running our TUM102. Your journey starts at Firmin Field, Kawerau, approximately one hour east of Rotorua. You’ll run 102km back to Rotorua, soaking up the most spectacular landscapes the region has to offer.
TUM Miler
The TUMMiler is one of the most scenic 100 mile runs in the world. Starting at Te Puia in the heart of Rotorua, the TUMMiler course takes you on a journey across the most spectacular landscapes the region has to offer.
